Fortunately, the whole has received a good dose of modernity thanks to the addition of wireless connection, joysticks and extended compatibility. During our tests, the absence of handles was felt in the more demanding games. Fortunately, the “Plus” version fixes this slight defect. As for the less fortunate, they will still be able to enjoy its qualities with the wired solution, which is much more affordable.

The different Switch controllers we tested.

We analyzed their designs.

We also checked that the buttons were neither too easy nor too hard to operate.

We paid attention to the flexibility of joysticks.

We then became interested in the connectivity and compatibility of the different controllers.

The latest tests focused on ergonomics and handling of in-game controllers.

Faceoff Deluxe PDP

This wired model is designed for all lovers of classic controllers. It takes over the codes of the Pro controller while adding the jack connector, ideal for in-game chat.

View the test Wait… We are looking for the price of this product on other sites The quality of this controller and its ergonomics make it an excellent solution for anyone who wants to leave their Joy Cons aside promoting a real controller without ruining itself. Certainly, you have to go through the inevitable cable but this allows it to present responsive and pleasant controls in addition to a very rare headphone jack on this console. Its only real defect comes from the absence of a vibration system, be it basic or HD, which, during our tests, prevented us from really immersing ourselves in action.

Best high-end

Nintendo Switch

The only official model in our selection, this controller includes everything you can expect from a model of the brand with a full range of features coupled with an excellent grip.

View the test Wait… We are looking for the price of this product on other sites Inspired by the official Xbox One controller, Nintendo managed a hell of poker that allows its homemade controller to tease this benchmark. So we felt a Similar comfort, favored by its asymmetrical joysticks and responsive and precise controls. However, we can blame him for the absence of analog triggers (progressive triggers), its rather slow load and buttons that are a little too deep for some players.

High-end alternative

PowerA Enhanced Wireless

Designed to compete with the solution made in Nintendo, this controller is aimed at people seeking a qualitative and effective accessory. Rather focused on hardcore players, she ignores different gadgets, sources of distraction.

View the test Wait… We are looking for the price of this product on other sites With a format reminiscent of its competitor, the PowerA controller is a more affordable alternative. It sacrifices some more gadget features (vibrations and NFC) to provide an interesting experience for more competitive players. We noticed, in our tests, that it compensated for this defect with responsive controls and effective keys. It can also adorn itself with a design with the effigy of your favorite Nintendo character.

Honourable Mentions

8bitdo Bluetooth Adapter (€15.42 when publishing): This model is not a controller strictly speaking but an adapter that allows you to use several models that are not compatible with your original Switch. It is useful if you already have another living room console and do not want to invest in a Pro controller. The list is quite extensive with: ProWiiMote, Wii U Pro, Joy-cons, Pro Controller, Dualshock 3 and 4, Xbox One (V2 and V3) and, of course, 8bitdo controllers. It can also be used with a PC, Raspberry Pi or Android TV. A new update added the compatibility with next-gen controllers.

PowerA GameCube Wireless Controller (see test) (€41.99 when published): nostalgic users can still regain sensations of another Nintendo model with this controller. Based on the one that accompanied the GameCube, it takes up a format very close to the original while slightly modifying its D-Pad to make it more spacious and adding the necessary keys for the Switch and motion capture. However, in practice, this design dating back to another era caused us some problems when, for example, the triggers needed to be used in critical situations, the latter being much less pleasant than what is currently being done. The connection is via Bluetooth but a more affordable wired version is also available.

How did we test?

To find out what was the best controller for this console, we decided to venture into different types of games by chaining games of about an hour. This allowed us to define the level of comfort and ergonomics of the various proposals while having a glimpse of the sensations during long-term use.

Since the Switch does not have a wide range of titles when moving to racing games or FPS, we have also decided to put our different test subjects to the test on PC to the test. Indeed, the compatibility of the Nintendo Switch controllers is ensured by the Steam application, which automatically recognizes them as official pro controllers.

We have of course varied the titles and the sensations. Here is a list of the main games we used.

On Nintendo Switch, we decided to choose:

  • In racing game, Asphalt 9 and its purely arcade orientation
  • In platform games, we opted for Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy, Dragon Quest Builder and Super Meat Boy

Unfortunately, we did not have any FPS available to us.

On PC, we played:

  • Ori and The Blind Forest for Platform
  • Call of Duty Black Ops 3 to FPS
  • The Crew 2 as an arcade racing game

These various titles have allowed us to clearly define the strengths and defects of the various controllers by their variety and their gameplays well. different.

Of course, in our PC tests, we kept in mind the constraints inherent in the Nintendo console such as the lack of compatibility with progressive triggers, for example.

How to choose your Switch controller?

The Nintendo Switch is the ultimate hybrid console. She has a pair of very well thought out Joy Cons allowing her very high flexibility. However, the latter often appeal less to salon players, accustomed to more classic controllers. As a result, it is not uncommon for these users to look for an alternative closer to their habits.

The operation of the Nintendo system means that it is not possible to use any controller (with one exception…). It is therefore important to determine which solutions are relevant among the models specific to this console. For you to assist, we have identified the following criteria:

  • Ergonomics : this criterion is in our view the most important because it combines the comfort of use and the handling of the various controls. Both of these must be considered to allow you to make the most of your favorite games. So make sure you enjoy a pleasant and natural grip coupled with responsive and well-placed controls. The controller’s template also has an impact but depends on specific criteria.
  • Built-in controls : Some controller models incorporate additional controls with standard solutions. These keys are often placed on the back of the case and allow for additional shortcuts, which are much easier to access.
  • The ancillary functions : gyroscope, NFC, vibration,… these elements are essential functions that can however be very interesting depending on your use of your console. Thus, while some players use motion capture very little, others master it as an art. Vibrations, on their part, are beneficial to immersion but are a source of distraction for some more demanding players.
  • Connectivity and Compatibility : Wired and wireless, a controller needs to be connected to your console to work. Both of these solutions are as valid as each other and depend essentially on your budget. Compatibility, on the other hand, affects the versatility of your controller: do you want to use it with multiple devices or limit yourself to your switch? Typically, models compatible with This hybrid solution can be used with your computer (via steam or dedicated software) and sometimes, Android (via Bluetooth).
  • Quality of workmanship and design : This last criterion impacts the durability and style of your controller. The quality of the materials is central and it is important to ensure that your accessory can endure multiple displacements and junk parts without injury. Design, on the other hand, is a matter of taste. Models compatible with the Nintendo console usually offer a fairly varied range of references to the brand’s icons.
