How to choose your motherboard?

Motherboards, like graphics cards and processors, are centerpieces of our computers and many do not know how they exist and what they actually provide. The difficulty in choosing one comes from the fact that there are many formats and just as many possibilities.

In order to know what to pay attention to purchasing one of these products, it is important to identify criteria on the basis of which to make a judgment:

  • Format : Most use an ATX format, which requires a larger enclosure, but they are faster and more versatile thanks to their many PCI-e ports and RAM slots. Micro-ATX has similar advantages but are more compact. Mini-ITX motherboards are the smallest and often the most dear. They are suitable for smaller configurations but have less extensive connectivity.
  • Socket : It allows you to connect your motherboard and processor. Current models are AM4 (AMD), Str4 (AMD Threadripper) or LGA-1200 (Intel). For older models, refer to the manufacturer’s information. However, it can be difficult to find a compatible motherboard.
  • The chipset : this is the main element of a motherboard. It will control the flow of data between the microprocessor and the other elements that make up the motherboard. Thus, a good chipset offers more functionality and will have an influence on the performance of the processor. Moreover, it is necessary to ensure their compatibility so as not to get bad surprises. Fortunately, Intel like AMD offer a summary page to help you.
  • Connectivity : Make sure you have the necessary connectivity for your components and peripherals. This happens internally AND externally. So make sure you have enough external USB ports, have powerful PCIe internally, and have enough RAM slots. For these, you need to ensure the support of your barrettes (aiming for DDR4 and the right maximum frequency). Dual-channel is also important in order to optimize RAM management.
  • The cooling system : it allows to cool the heat-generating elements. This is often the case with overclocking, which is a process that aims to push your components to their maximum. Make sure that enough fans can be connected to ensure a flow significant air. For the most demanding, care must be taken to support the watercooling (water cooling).

Our Choice, Best Midrange

Gigabyte Z590 Aorus Ultra Designed for demanding Intel enthusiasts, it picks up the best of today. It is, of course, to be favourable in the context of a more advanced configuration.

Wait… look for the price of this product on other sites Gigabyte integrates all the most interesting into its motherboard to make it one of the most complete models currently. Thus, we are entitled to an up-to-date proposal and all kinds of optimizations to push your components to the fullest.

This motherboard features the LGA-1200 socket coupled with the latest chipset to date, the Z590. It is therefore compatible with the latest 11th generation Intel processors and is optimized for overclocking to get the most out of your chip.

Connectivity is quite extensive with two PCIe 4.0 ports internally (one 16 (8x)), AMD CrossFire compatibility, three M.2 ports (one in PCIe 4.0) in addition to the more conventional connectors. Externally, we are entitled to four USB 3.0 ports, four USB 3.1, one USB-C 3.2, one RJ45 port and one DisplayPort. Wi-Fi 6 AX and Bluetooth 5.1 complete the table.

Graphics PCIe are reinforced to support the largest components, allowing the most powerful graphics cards of the moment to be placed without fear of breakage.

The cooling system is suitable for an advanced overclock: the brand has seen fit to incorporate a good number of radiators to cool the connector and M.2 drives. The set is managed by Smart Fan 6 and its eight internal sensors. You can also connect up to eight fans to the dedicated connectors.

The last aspect is related to other additions. First, support for RGB Fusion 2.0 is provided with, as a bonus, two addressable RGB LED connectors and two more standard. Then the board equips with premium audio capacitors and an integrated amplifier adjusting impedance depending on the connected hardware. Finally, a USB port is provided for updating your BIOS without requiring any other components.

It is also available in AMD version with the X570 chipset. The latter only uses 4.0 for its PCIe connectors, whether graphics or M.2. However, it still includes USB 2.0, sacrifices USB 3.2, support for DTS:X Ultra and RAM up to 5400 MHz and 2.5 Gbps ethernet port.

Thus, we find here the PCIe 4.0 with M.2 SSD slots to push performance to its maximum. The B550M chipset allows you to soften the note without sacrificing too much performance.

It is again of a model in ATX format. It teamed up with the B550M chipset to deliver a high level of performance with the latest processors of the brand. The latter, although designed for the entry-level, is just as effective as the X570 for normal use or light overclocking.

The connection is of course as a result with a 16x PCIe 3.0 port (4x), one PCIe 4.0 16x, two 1x PCIe 3.0, one M.2 — PCI-E 4.0 4x SATA 6 Gb/s and an X M.2 — PCI-E 3.0 4x. The CrossFireX support is of course provided and four DDR4 RAM sticks can be installed with a maximum frequency of 4400 MHz.. or more if you are for overclocking.

Externally, the set is quite classic with two USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.0 ports, a USB 3.1 port, a USB-C 3.1, an HDMI, a Dp and the other usual connectors.

For cooling, there are two dedicated heatsinks for M.2 drives and a connector for eight additional fans that can be managed either by the BIOS or by the Dragon Center, provided by the brand.

Customization is still ensured with the support of the RGB Mystic Light, which allows you to control your compatible components equipped with this type of lighting. In this sense, we find an RGB LED connector and two addressable connectors.

Its during Intel is a little less interesting in our eyes. Indeed, Intel’s affordable chipset loses enormously in the face of Z chipsets, so it is unfortunately not compatible with PCIe 4.0 and has a less extensive connection (including sacrificing USB 3.1). Compatibility with RAM bars, on the other hand, is limited to 2933 MHz.

The best upscale motherboard: ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Hero

Best high-end

However, there is a slight defect. Indeed, it has only 2 M.2 ports where competition generally proposes 3. Its equivalent for Intel, the Maximus XII Hero, is just as qualitative.

This is a dedicated card for Intel processors with the 1200 socket coupled to the X570 chipset. It is therefore compatible with the Ryzen 2000 and 3000 in addition to the PCIe 4.0 for the latter.

Thus, we are entitled to: three reinforced PCIe 4.0 16x, one PCIe 4.0 1x, 2 M.2 — PCI-E 3.0 4x internally and, for the external, four USB 3.0, seven USB 3.1 and one USB-C 3.1. Like its competitor, it accepts up to four DDR4 bars clocked at a maximum of 4600 MHz. Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi AX are also integrated with Mi-MB support for a connection optimized.

For ventilation, you have the option to connect eight live fans on the board. Watercooling is also a possibility. The set can be managed via the Fan Xpert 4 software. The M.2 ports are also protected thanks to the supplied radiators.

The ancillary features menu include a USB port for updating the BIOS and integrating Aura RGB for lighting management (both on the board and your compatible components). You also need to count on the built-in features of Asus including the 5-Way optimization that boosts the performance of your configuration.

In the end, if you want the best done and your budget allows you, opt for this motherboard or, if you are at Intel, its equivalent, the Maximus XII Hero.
